My fabric samples of my first collection for Makower UK recently arrived and I cannot tell you enough how exciting it is to see it! And how amazing to have this fabric with my designs on it. That’s a dream come true right there.
I’ve been fortunate over the years to work as a freelance designer primarily in the craft/hobby industry but have always struggled with low self esteem and confidence issues. Designing graphics for craft software and digital downloads is one thing but pitching my designs to fabric manufacturers felt huge and scary. But I did it anyway.
Yes, there’s a lot of competition. Yes, there’s the fear of rejection. And yes, I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone. I learned a long time ago that stepping out of your comfort zone is where the magic happens. It only takes “10 seconds of bravery to pick up the phone, send an email or whatever”. This was something I heard on a Creative Live Surface Pattern course taught by Bonnie Christine. She also said that “there’s room for you”. How true both those things are.
You only need a little bit of bravery to try something new. To move towards your goals and dreams. And even in an over saturated market, there’s room for you. I did it and you can too.
I’m 54yrs old. This is huge for me at this time in my life. I’m grateful every day for this work and career change. As a result of this collection, I’ve designed and am teaching some workshops at my local fabric shop (I’m going to do them as online courses at some point) – I’m doing a little bit of mentoring – always believe in sharing everything you know. Plus, one of my favourite magazines, Quilt Now, are doing a little feature on me later in the year.
I believe in faith and action. I believe that as you physically move forward and start to show your work and have those “10 seconds” of bravery, doors open. Be encouraged. Be your unique self and share your gifts and talents with the world. The world truly needs what you have.
