Recently I made my grandchildren a lap quilt each and it’s now one of my favourite sewing projects. It was really easy and quick to do so I thought I’d share it with you.
To create my cheater quilt I used Spoonflower’s Fill A Yard template service. I designed my own fabrics and created a Collection with them. There are lots of Collections on Spoonflower to choose from or you can make your own. You DO NOT have to design your own fabrics. You can choose from the thousands of beautiful designs on Spoonflower by many amazing artists, to create you own collection. Please see my links below this post for more info.
After I’d created my Collection, I then chose the “Cheater Quilt 6” Squares” Fill A Yard option. Next is the fun part of laying out the designs how you want them. Once I was happy with the layout, I chose the fabric type (Petal Signature Cotton) and added to my basket to order. I’m in the UK and it took just over a week to arrive from the USA.
I made a quilt sandwich with my cheater quilt fabric yard, using wadding (batting) and scraps from my fabric stash, and then followed a tutorial on YouTube by Jenny Doan at the Missouri Star Quilt Co. for creating a “self binding quilt.” (Link to the tutorial at the end of this post).
The tutorial tells you exactly how much fabric you need for the backing/binding as well as the process for doing the quilt sandwich.
I quilted simple straight lines but you could easily do something more fancy. The whole thing only took a couple of hours. I think they’re so lovely. My grandkids were really happy with them. I made one for my baby granddaughter as a playmat. My daughter ended up using is a pram blanket.

I’d love to know if you end up making a cheater quilt like this. They’re so fun as well as being fairly easy and quick to make.
